As you may have heard, this year we are all going to tackle the plastic problem. From July 3, the new legislation will be in force to combat plastic pollution and plastic soup. In this blog, we will tell you what the consequences are of the Single Use Plastic legislation (SUP) for you as a hospitality entrepreneur and what good alternatives are available. The SUP legislation rules

To ensure that hardly any plastic products end up in the sea and wash up on beaches, various rules have been established regarding the SUP directive. The directive applies to plastic products of all types of plastic, including oil-based plastics (such as PE) and plant-based plastics (such as PLA). Since the rules of this new legislation are somewhat unclear, we have made the rules and consequences for the hospitality industry clear in this article.

The measures regarding the SUP legislation can be summarized as follows, from July 3:

• The sale of various disposable products, including plastic plates, cutlery, stirrers, and straws, will be prohibited.
• A deposit will be introduced for all bottles up to 3 liters.
• It is mandatory to indicate on all drinking cups and hygiene products which waste stream they belong to, which plastics are in the product, and their environmental consequences.

From January 2023, various additional measures will be introduced regarding producer responsibility, product requirements, and consumption reduction. We will also share these measures at that time.

Alternatives to plastic disposables

Especially hospitality companies need to switch to alternatives. The consequences of the SUP legislation will therefore be most noticeable there. As mentioned above, there will be a ban on plastic plates, cutlery, stirrers, and straws.

Fortunately, there are plenty of sustainable alternatives to plastic. Many environmentally friendly products are made from sugarcane (bagasse) because it is biodegradable. In addition, paper and cardboard products are also an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic as they can often be recycled.
