Sustainability Day: Together for a green future

On Oct. 10, we celebrate Sustainability Day, a day when we all reflect on sustainability and discover ways to take better care of our planet. Whether you have big plans or just want to make some small changes, everyone can contribute to a greener world on this day. But what exactly does this day entail? And what can you do to make a difference? In this blog we'll tell you all about it and give you useful tips.

What is Sustainability Day?

Sustainability Day is an annual moment when we pay extra attention to the future of our planet. The goal is to make people aware of their impact on the environment and to show how we can live more sustainably through small changes. Whether it's using less energy, producing less waste, or using sustainable products - every step counts.

In the Netherlands, this day has been organized since 2009, and since then more and more companies, schools and individuals have joined in with sustainable actions and initiatives.

Why is Sustainability Day so important?

The world is changing rapidly. We are increasingly noticing the effects of climate change, such as extreme weather conditions and the disappearance of nature. To ensure that future generations can also enjoy a healthy planet, we need to take action now. Sustainability Day is an opportunity to reflect on the way we treat the earth and become aware of ways to improve it. By making sustainable choices on this day, we take a step in the right direction.

What can you do on Sustainability Day?

There are plenty of ways you can do your bit for a more sustainable world on 10 October. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Use sustainable products: Consider replacing disposable plastic products with sustainable alternatives. For example, use cardboard coffee cups or paper bags instead of plastic bags. Trays made from sugar cane are also a good and eco-friendly alternative.

2. Energy saving: On Sustainability Day, you can be more conscious of energy consumption. Turn off appliances completely instead of leaving them on standby, use LED lighting or turn the thermostat down a degree. These are small changes that can make a big difference in the long run.

3. Join a local action: Many municipalities organise clean-up campaigns or other sustainable initiatives. See if there is something to do in your area. It is not only good for the world, but also fun to do together with others!

4. Plant a tree: Trees help remove CO2 from the air, and planting even a small plant can contribute to a better environment. If you have the space, plant a tree in your garden. No garden? Many projects make it possible to have trees planted in other places.

5. Buy consciously: On this day, you can consciously think about what you buy and consume. Consider, for example, choosing local, organic products or supporting companies that consider sustainability very important.
