All about the PFAS ban

Perhaps you have heard about it in the past few months: there is a ban on products containing PFAS. Curious about which products are affected and what the new rules entail? We have put all the facts together for you!

What is PFAS?

PFAS (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances) is a collective term for about 6,000 substances found in various products. These substances are used, among other things, to make products grease-free and water-repellent. Many of our sugar cane products also contain this substance, such as the well-known white sauce cups, snack trays, and menu boxes.

Why a ban on PFAS?

According to RIVM, products containing PFAS are safe and do not have harmful effects on health. However, a ban is being imposed on their production because the Netherlands and some other European countries want as little as possible to end up in the environment.

No need to panic!

The new regulation will come into effect as of July 1, 2022. However, there is no need to panic! A reasonable transitional period has been included for all products placed on the market before January 1, 2023. These may be traded until stocks run out if they comply with the Packaging and Consumer Goods Regulations as they existed on June 30, 2022.

Sugar cane disposables without PFAS

Currently, there are many developments underway regarding the production of sugar cane products without PFAS. Until then, our current sugar cane products may still be sold and used.
